EXPERIMENTAL STUDY ON THE SLOSHING PRESSURE OF RECTANGULAR TANKS: 3RD REPORT

Following the experiments with rectangular tanks having internal members experiments were carried out with three "smooth" rectangular tanks in order to determine the influence, on sloshing, of the fundamental test-condition. This 3rd Report gives an account of this further work with the tanks in the longitudinal and transverse directions, and dynamic pressure was studied at first resonance and first multiple resonance in the longitudinal direction. The response curve for dynamic pressure on the internal wall of the tank was derived, and distributions of dynamic pressure at non-resonance and resonance were clarified. Design formulae for the total pressure acting on the watertight bulkhead at non-resonance and resonance were derived, and values obtained with them were compared with total pressure in the completely-full condition; the results are presented and discussed. An approximate formula is proposed for the maximum expected value of the total pressure in pitching and rolling motions, and several conclusions are drawn on the partial filling of cargo tanks.
