ROLE OF SOLID LUBRICATION IN HIGH-ENERGY BRAKING

A conceptual study has been made to explore the rationale of solid lubricants added in aircraft brake materials. A single stage caliper brake was used. The effect of concentration of lubricants on the friction and wear behavior of brake materials rubbing against a steel (17-22 AS) used in aircraft brakes was examined. Under the conditions of this conceptual study an optimum amount of lubricating constituent was found. The performance of various solid lubricant additives was investigated for newly developed nickel based brake materials sliding on the steel.
