This article reviews the types of research being carried out in areas of concern to NASA within the framework of the agency's Aircraft Energy Efficiency Program in order to provide technology and systems for safe and efficient operations in the future. The research described deals principally with flight safety, the overcoming of limitations on terminal-area operations through such devices as the Terminal Configured Vehicle and the powered wheel concept, the prediction of responses to aircraft motion and noise, the economics of aircraft system innovations, the use of coal-derived fuels for aircraft, and new transport aircraft concepts.
