SUPERPOSITION OF TWO-DIMENSIONAL ERROR FIELDS AND ITS INFLUENCE ON FLIGHT SAFETY OF AIR TRAFFIC

DIE UEBERLAGERUNG ZWEIDIMENSIONALER FEHLERFELDER UND IHR EINFLUSS AUF DIE FLUGSICHERHEIT IM LUFTVERKEHR

This report deals with theoretical studies concerning the superposition of two-dimensional error fields and its influence on the safety of air traffic. Local error fields being significant with respect to flight safety and their description by means of error ellipses, 95 per cent circles, and some other curves representing the same probability are studied. It is shown which conclusions can be drawn from the frequency distribution of asymmetrical real phenomena. Also treated are the statistical laws for the determination of the mean error vector and the covariance matrix of the superimposed field from the corresponding values of the original, normally distributed error fields. Some rules are given for the shape and the area of error contours of the superposition.
