2006 Transit Passenger Demographic Survey

The purpose of this study was to better understand the demographic characteristics, such as age, gender, income, household size, and ethnicity, of transit passengers in the San Francisco Bay Area. The study involved a survey of passengers who use the fixed route services provided by thirteen major transit providers and seven additional smaller operators within the region. The survey included the collection of data on a variety of transit modes (such as bus, ferry, and train) during various on and off-peak times, from a diverse cross section of transit users, including those who do not speak English. The survey was conducted in two phases: phase 1 covered transit riders during the 6 am to 9pm time period, while phase 2 covered night time transit riders who used the system between 9pm and 6am.
