THE PERFORAMCE OF GALVANIZED REINFORCEMENT IN HIGH CHLORIDE ENVIRONMENTS

Four different structures were exposed either directly to seawater or sea spray, such that chloride ion can accumulate to relatively high levels in the concrete within the range of age of these structures. Two types of analysis were made: (a) chloride concentration measurements and (b) metallographic examination of the galvanized coating on the reinforcing bars. The results indicate that the galvanized reinforcing bars are performing satifactorily in concrete containing chloride which is well above that needed to induce corrosion of untreated steel. /TRRL/
