This new guide, intended to encourage safe operating practice with inert gas systems, has been prepared by a group of international experts principally with crude oil tankers in mind. It is, however, also suitable for use with products carriers, since systems of basically the same type can be used for such vessels. Although the fitting of inert gas systems in tankers is already standard practice in new crude carriers, it was given added impetus by the IMCO Conference on Tanker Safety and Pollution Prevention last February, which introduced increased requirements for inert gas, including the fitting of systems in some existing tankers.
