A SIMPLIFIED METHOD TO CALCULATE DYNAMIC BEHAVIOUR OF FOOTBRIDGES

A simple computer program to calculate the dynamic behaviour of footbridges is described. In accordance with recent design rules the fundamental natural frequency of the bridge superstructure and the acceleration response due to the passage of a pedestrian can be calculated. The accuracy of the program has been assessed by extensive comparisons with a much larger "beam-element" program and with experimental measurements. Guidelines are given defining the range of applicability of the program and their use is demonstrated by reference to eleven existing bridges considered in earlier work. The fundamental natural frequency of many types of highway bridges can also be calculated. /Author/
