ESTIMATION OF THE NATURAL FREQUENCIES OF CONTINUOUS MULTI-SPAN BRIDGES

The natural frequencies of vertical bending vibration of a bridge play a major part in the response of the bridge to moving traffic loads. The magnitude of this response is taken for structural design as a dynamic load allowance, or impact factor, and it also determines the serviceability of the bridge for pedestrian use. This report presents tables of natural frequencies for straight, continuous symmetric multispan uniform beams of two through six spans, for various span ratios. A simple method for idealization of a bridge as a uniform beam is given, and with the tables permits estimation of the natural frequencies of any reasonably beam-like bridge.
