VISION ON ITS WITHIN SUSTAINABLE SAFETY BASED POLICY IN THE NETHERLANDS

ITS deserves a prominent position in road safety policy based on the Dutch Sustainable Safety vision. ITS adds to safety by its ability to adapt to different types of road users and traffic circumstances. For many applications prospects are positive, but real-life effects are still insufficiently known. Informaton systems are more likely to be introduced on short term rather than intervening systems. The best way to proceed is to integrate ITS with traditional measures and to optimize safety aspects together with other policy areas. A strong cooperation between all relevant stakeholders is needed, and research on many aspects needs to continue. For the covering abstract see ITRD E134653.
