NONDESTRUCTIVE INSPECTION OF AIRCRAFT STRUCTURES AND MATERIALS VIA ACOUSTIC EMISSION

This presentation limits itself to acoustic emission results obtained on typical aircraft structural materials such as aluminum, titanium, and steel and a new material, metal-honeycomb. Briefly, the effect of temperature, welds, fatigue cycles, and other parameters on acoustic emission data are illustrated. A damage concept in which fracture mechanics technology is merged with acoustic emission technology is presented. The application of acoustic emission systems to a full scale aircraft during structural testing is also described.
