Grumman Corporation has proposed a joint production programme with British industry, valued at approximately 10 million pounds sterling, for a new class of patrol hydrofoil boats being offered to the Royal Navy for its fisheries patrol duties. Called the Flagstaff Mark II, this new 95-ton hydrofoil, capable of speeds up to 50 knots, is an improved version of an earlier Flagstaff currently in service with the U.S. Coast Guard. The Mark II can operate foilborne in 10-foot sea conditons. When hullborne, the Mark II performs like a conventional patrol vessel. The boat's design makes it suitable for combat missions or long-range patrols required for ocean surveillance and fisheries protection.
