TRANSPORT AND ENERGY. REPORT FROM AN ENERGY CONFERENCE AND HEARINGS IN USA

ENERGI I ROERELSE. RAPPORT FRAAN ENERGIKONFERENS OCH HEARINGS I USA

This report is a compilation of material dealing with global trends in the transport/energy field with the main focus on the development in the United States, collected during an international conference on energy use management in Tucson, Arizona, 1977. The conference was divided into thirteen subject groups. The author believes that the energy problems of the next 20-30 years will mainly be concerned with preparations for replacing fossil fuels by renewable energy sources, primarily solar energy accumulated on earth and in space, augmented by wind and wave energy, water power, biomass and other known sources of energy including waste heat. Energy consumption in the industrialized world will not increase as rapidly as before. In the developing world the emphasis on the development of renewable sources of energy will pave the way for faster growth. There is a risk of energy crises during the rest of the 20th century but any crisis that may arise will in the long run probably only have marginal effects and speed up the transition to alternative sources of energy. Each individual nation will have to work out crisis programmes to be put into effect should a crisis arise. Research and information are key factors. Regarding transport and energy, developments differ greatly in various parts of the world. In the author's view the most important factors in the future will be technological development, restrictions on motoring and rising energy prices versus land use for housing, increased economically active rates and leisure and rising private incomes. /TRRL/
