AN AUTOMATIC RELEASING DEVICE FOR SAFETY SEAT BELTS

UN DISPOSITIF DE DECROCHAGE AUTOMATIQUE POUR CEINTURES DE SECURITE

This paper describes the advantages of automatic releasing devices for safety belts, following an accident or collision. Requirements for belts with an automatic releasing device are discussed in terms of time lag between collision and operation of automatic release, force on belt required to trigger release mechanism, and repetition of releasing process in multiple-impact accidents. The author recommends that seat belts with automatic release should be made easily recognised as such, by means of a short explicit instruction, displayed on the chest strap of the belt. This is a translation from the French text which was originally published in Revue Automobile, May 1978. /TRRL/
