VEGETATION AND EROSION CONTROL

This study was initiated to evaluate the performance of various seed mixtures, fertilizers, mulches and other products which are used in the control of vegetation and erosion on roadside areas. The research project was initiated in January of 1962. It was in direct response to numerous erosion prevention and vegetation management problems being encountered at that time on new construction projects and the resulting roadsides. Due to the various needs or ideas that arose and the freedom presented by the projects' broad title "Vegetation and Erosion Control", various rather diverse studies were conducted. Included were field trials, replicated standard field research plots, demonstration projects, greenhouse and laboratory studies. The research activities were started in the summer of 1962. The last formal observations were made in the fall of 1970. Casual observations have since been made of some sites. Some studies have been completed, published and/or presented previously. Studies previously reported before all work was complete will be finalized. There have been two previous published project reports, both of which are now out of print. Condensations of the major items contained therein will be included along with comments based on observations over the intervening time. All previous writings and formal presentations resulting or partly resulting from this project are listed at the end of the report. The findings have generally long since been implemented in procedures, design, construction, maintenance practices, manuals and/or specifications. Where there may still be opportunity for additional implementation or need for added research, it will be pointed out. Shortly after this project was started, due to the quanity of highway construction, particularly the interstate program, numerous states encountered similar problems. Several erosion control and vegetation establishment projects were started. Most of these have been reported. Most of the work published prior to 1966 germane to the subjects has been previously reviewed ("Method and Materials for the Maintenance of Turf on Highway Rights-of-Way, An Annotated Bibliography"). No added review of the recent work is contained herein. A formal research project such as this one, formally funded by another agency, in this case the former Bureau of Public Roads (now the Federal Highway Administration) requires a formal project completion. This report is that document for this project. /Author/
