FIRE ENDURANCE OF ALUMINIUM AND STEEL HATCH COVERS

This Report which is available in microfiche form, describes full-scale fire tests performed on steel and aluminium hatch covers. The hatch covers concerned were oval or circular in form, of the type used on tankers. These covers were subjected to a 30-minute fire test in which flame temperatures reached 1900 deg F. The aluminium hatch covers deformed within 10 minutes of the start of the tests, and had melted within 17 minutes; the steel hatch covers remained intact throughout.
