Guide to pavement technology: part 4B: asphalt

This guide has been prepared as part of the Austroads Guide to Pavement Technology to provide an introduction to the nature of asphalt as a material and its application in road pavements. Information is provided in Appendix A to assist in the selection of a mix types which best meets the performance requirements for a particular situation. The four mix types covered in the document are dense graded asphaltic concrete, open graded asphalt, stone mastic asphalt and fine gap graded asphalt. Appendix B contains guidelines for a specification framework for asphalt. This includes information on hot-in-place recycling, cold in situ recycling and cold plant mix recycling of reclaimed asphalt pavements (RAP). Generic specification clauses for in conclusion in contract documentation or as a framework for the preparation of individual specifications or quality plans are included. These clauses are applicable to component materials, design and manufacture and placement of dense graded, stone mastic, open graded fine gap graded and asphalt and recycled asphalts. The specification clauses apply to most uses of asphalt. The specification clauses are based on a quality system approach, with asphalt being specified in terms of performance-related mix design criteria as well as manufacture and construction standards.
