Blowing their own trumpet
This article describes a newly developed reinforcement device for concrete road surfaces. Manufacturer Hilti has produced a steel shear connector, known as the Hilti trumpet, consisting of a steel pin with a funnel shaped head. The bottom section of the pin is profiled to be screwed into the base layer of concrete, and mortar is injected through the pin to complete the connection. Reinforcement can sit on top of the connector or be threaded through a hole at the top of the funnel, before a top layer of concrete is laid. There are benefits in both cost and quality. The system has been used in numerous projects in Europe.
