Rail grinding operations in Sweden
This article describes the rail grinding carried out in Sweden, with particular reference to the heavy haul freight line. Axle load on the line has been upgraded, increasing total train weight significantly. A grinding programme was initiated in 1997 when a new target profile was introduced. The new profile was wear-adopted to conform to the worn wheels of freight trains and reduced the need to replace severely-damaged rails. More optimised target profiles have since been developed. Rail grinding has also been introduced for conventional lines on all new rails and, when track conditions require it, on used rails, with corrective grinding to be used on very bad profiles. Switches are ground on the same criteria, with a specifically designed profile as an interim target. Planning of operations has been centralised and grinding policy may be changed in the future to adapt to increasing traffic.
