DIMENSIONS OF AIRLINE GROWTH (FEBRUARY 1979)

This document outlines how the Boeing Commercial Airplane Company forecasts the long-term market for aircraft. It is divided, as the chart below suggests, into the following four sections. Section 1 outlines historical economic growth for the U.S., Europe, and Japan and also provides the Boeing outlook for those areas. The purpose of this section is to provide an understanding of the long-range economic environment in which the airline industry is developing. Sections 2 and 3 outline historical world airline passenger and cargo performance from 1945 through 1978 and extends the Boeing long-range forecast through 1992. Section 4 presents the methodology Boeing uses to forecast airline sales, open market, and fleets. It also provides historical and forecast data from 1958 through 1988.
