In this paper the author discusses the effects of the reduction in government allocation of funds for road maintenance. Statistics are quoted, and the present situation in some large cities in Sweden is outlined. Among the consequences mentioned by the author are: lower traffic safety standard; increase in fuel consumption (20-30 mm deep tracks can result in an increase of 5-10%); increase in tyre wear (up to 100%); increase in car maintenance and repair costs. Finally, the author points out that the "savings" obtained through the cuts are marginal compared with what the motorist has to pay as a result of poor road surface maintenance. /TRRL/
