SELECTED BUDGET ISSUES IN THE FEDERAL AVIATION ADMINISTRATION

In this report GAO 1) Reviews savings projected by the Federal Aviation Administration to result from fully funding its flight service station automation program in 1980. Flight service stations provide pilots with briefings on weather conditions and take and file a pilot's flight plan. 2) Determines that the full funding concept offers a number of advantages. 3) Considers whether availability of the Facilities and Equipment appropriation should be extended from 3 years to 5 years as requested by FAA and concludes it should be. 4) Examines, on the basis of cost comparisons, whether FAA should purchase a flight inspection simulator for training considering the availability of such equipment in the private sector.
