FACES OF BRIDGES AND VIADUCTS WITH REGARD TO THEIR FUNCTION AND SURROUNDINGS

VORMGEVING VAN VIADUCTENIN VERBAND MET FUNOTIE EN OMGEVING

A study has been carried out concerning the way in which the shape of bridges and viaducts in motorways creates an impression on the road-user; how far the shape of bridges and viaducts harmonizes with the road-picture, the situation and the surroundings, and how far it has no disturbing influence on the observer. From this study it is apparent that the design of bridges and viaducts in the Netherlands compared with the surrounding foreign countries leads to exceedingly successful results. In this book indications are given concerning the appearance of bridges and viaducts in order to obtain a good harmony with the road-picture, the situation and the surroundings and to illustrate successful results. The nearby foreign countries are included as well. Also less successful results are shown. The authors tried to make clear how important it is that the designer should be aware of the surroundings in which a bridge or viaduct will be constructed as well as of its future situation. The designer will take this into consideration in his project. The handsome examples demonstrate that a viaduct in the Netherlands is not only a result of calculation, on the contrary the designer has a suitable and handsome appearance in mind. /TRRL/
