Smart wheels for city streets - 2004 edition - traffic congestion - solving the urban transport dilemma - the benefits of powered two-wheelers to an integrated transport policy

This pamphlet outlines the ways in which powered two-wheelers (PTWs) (mopeds, scooters and motorcycles) can make towards resolving the problems of urban traffic congestion and pollution in the UK. Issues relating to PTW impracticality in adverse weather conditions, the noise and exhaust emissions of PTWs, the lack of secure parking for PTWs and the susceptibility of PTW riders to accidents are discussed. The need for PTWs to be considered by transport planners and policy makers in an integrated transport policy is emphasised. The roles of different stakeholders (national and local government, town planners and engineers, PTW manufactures and dealers, PTW riders, drivers of other vehicles, training organisations, and the police) in developing national, regional and local strategies for motorcycle use are outlined. Ways in which the transport infrastructure can be changed to improve PTW accessibility and reduce vulnerability are listed. The objectives of Association of European Motorcycle Manufacturers (ACEM) are outlined.
