Innovation is spreading fast

Highway authorities in the UK are spending large amounts on innovative methods of improving the more traditional methods of road maintenance to meet current needs. With respect to surface dressing, improvements have been made in binder technology, staff training and quality assurance. The difficulties associated with the laboratory evaluation of durability for road maintenance materials led to the development of the BBA HAPAS scheme. The key deliverables driving innovation for any maintenance authority are safety, the environment, disruption for road-users and economics. Road surface requirements for safe urban roads, the safety problems associated with potholes, 'green' innovative additives e.g. Aspha-min, Vegecol and Surmac Eco, improvements to sustainability by minimising paved thickness and increasing durability, recycling the arisings (by-products) of patching and trenching, and the use of properly designed foamed concrete for trench reinstatement to reduce disruption for road users are discussed.
