This report deals with some characteristics of taxi journeys in different types of regions in Sweden. The taxi traffic in four selected areas - i.e. Large city, town, small town and a sparsely populated area - was carefully investigated based on detailed information collected for one week in November 1975. Using a sample number of taxicabs, data for each trip were recorded. Measured in terms of the fare-paying proportion of total taxi driving times, the results show an efficiency of between 42% and 52% in the selected areas. In the studies of the large city and the town the most intensive taxi traffic took place during the daytime on weekdays plus Friday and Saturday nights. In the other two study areas almost all taxi traffic was limited to daytime throughout the week, with Saturdays showing a somewhat lower frequency. The spatial patterns of the taxi journeys have been mapped for each area. The journey pattern in all three urban areas is dominated by radial journeys focusing on the town centre. In the sparsely populated area the field of taxicab operations is more of a mosaic with sub-areas in which the traffic is mainly focused on small local centres. Those few journeys which go outside the sub-areas are mostly focused on higher level centres. In the last part of the report the taxi efficiency is calculated in terms of unused operating time, unpaid return journeys and waiting time together with unused seating capacity. Taking these reduction factors into account, taxi efficiency has been calculated to be between 15% and 20% of its potential. /TRRL/
