ANALYSIS AND DESIGN OF ADVANCED STERN-TUBE BEARING SYSTEMS

This report covers the development of new bearing concepts aimed at improving the conditions and reliability of stern-tube bearing operation. An analysis of shaft bending and bearing performance has been translated into appropriate computer programs which provide comprehensive solutions to the shaft-bearing problem. Two new bearing arrangements, one rigid and one self-aligning, both containing new bearing designs, are proposed which provide system optimization for each particular vessel. A sample analysis of an actual 380,000 DWT tanker is conducted in order to show the striking superiority of the proposed new bearing designs.
