DIVERSE ASPECTS OF THE FATIGUE OF BITUMINOUS MIXES. PREDICTON, FAILURE, CONDITIONS OF SOLICITATION

ASPECTS DIVERS DE LA FATIGUE DES MELANGES BITUMINEUX. PREVISION, RUPTURE, CONDITION DE SOLLICITATIONS

This report concerns diverse aspects of the fatigue of bituminous mixes (prediction, failure, conditions of solicitation) used in road construction. It discusses formulation of the fatigue law, evolution of the mechanical properties as a consequence of the fatigue in bending, mechanics of failure, and infleunce of the resting periods and the temperature variations on the susceptibility to fatigue of the bituminous mixes. The study concludes that the beneficial effect of the resting periods seems to be definitely lesser when the solicitation occurs at low temperature (winter period) than when it occurs at higher temperature (spring, autumn, summer). The longer these resting periods and the higher the temperature during these periods, the greater their benficial effect; however, temperatures high enough to effectively enhance this effect can only be expected in the summer period. There appears from this that the least favourable period, as far as fatigue of the bituminous mixtures is concerned, is the winter one since this is the time when the recovery probabilities are the least.
