THE APPLICATION OF GEL PERMEATION CHROMATOGRAPHY TO THE ANALYSIS OF BINDERS IN PAINT USED FOR ROAD MARKING

This report deals with the fractionation by gel permeation chromatography of binders in road-marking paints incorporating glycerophthalic resin, chlorinated rubber, acrylic-vinyltoluence copolymer, and their mixtures. Gel permeation chromatography makes it possible to determine macromolecular magnitudes (length and polydispersity) and to perform quantitative fractionation. This technique is very effective in particular for separating chlorinated paraffin, phenolic resins, linseed oil, chinawood oil, glycerophthalic resin, chlorinated rubber, and acrylic-vinyltoluene copolymer. On the other hand, when the polydispersity of the compounds to be fractionated is high, or when there is little difference between average macromolecular magnitudes (as in the case of glycerophthalic resin, chlorinated rubber, acrylic-vinyltoluene copolymer, phenolic resin and chinawood oil), fractionation does not have sufficient resolution to quantify each compound. The problem can then be solved by a method of estimation based on particular experimental values. Since the maximum peak heights are increasing functions of the concentration of the constituents, it is possible to draw an experimental curve giving the relation between heights and the content of one of the compounds whose proportion it is desired to determine. For the particular glycerophthalic resin/chlorinated rubber system, the quantity of this constituent can be determined by nephelemetry or by organic chlorine titration. /Author/
