THE TREATMENT OF SANDS: A CONTRIBUTION TO THE STUDY OF THE PROPERTIES OF MATERIALS

With the object of gaining knowledge of, and improving, the mechanical performances (immediate and in the long term) of treated sands, eight sands were selected so as to make it possible to study the influence of particle size distribution, angularity, mineralogical nature, and cleanliness. These sands were treated with cement, slag (granulated and pre-crushed) and bitumen. For the sands treated with hydraulic binders, the study covered: The analysis of the nature of the sand and the method of treatment on compactness, compactibility, immidate bearing capacity (CBR test), mechanical strength and modulus at different ages. The analysis of immediate stability, on the basis of cohesion and the angle of interrnal friction. The relation between the speed of propagation of sound and the modulus. Cracking by heat shrinkage and the coefficient of expansion. For the sands treated with bitumen, they study covered: The analysis of the influence of the nature of the sand (particle distribution size, angularity, mineralogical nature) on workability, compactibility, compactness, and stability, in combination with the influence of the method of compaction, bitumen content, and temperature. The analysis of the relationships between these characteristics. The analysis of behavior in respect of rutting and creep. In accordance with their mechanical performances, the sands treated were placed in categories to which correspond their possible uses in pavements. The results as a whole show that the properties of treated sands are extremely wide-ranging, and that certain combinations of parameters and treatments allow of the use of treated sands in pavement courses nearer the surface, and under heavier traffic, than is generally thought. /Author/
