BRT comes of age
Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) is growing rapidly in the UK, showing a similar level of service to light rail for 3- to 5-fold less cost. The first BRT schemes were introduced in Curitiba, Brazil and Essen, Germany. Successful BRT schemes have been implemented in Ottawa, Canada, Brisbane, Australia, Rouen, France as well as the UK. Details are given of the schemes that are operating or are planned in the UK: the Clyde Fastlink, Crawley Fastway, Edinburgh Fastlink, Cambridgeshire Guided Busway, Dunstable Translink, Kent Fastrack, Leigh busway, Swansea Metro and the Thames Gateway Transit.
