Car park specialists harness new technology

The contract for the management of the 9000-space car park at Eurostar's Ebbsfleet International Station, UK, is due to be awarded in 2007. Network Rail is leading a study on behalf of the Department for Transport to find additional station car park sites. South West Trains has a #20 million car park expansion scheme under way. Providing a second deck to increase station car park capacity is becoming popular. Parking management priorities at rail stations include security and safety. National Car Parks (NCP) manages car parks at 210 stations across the UK. Park Mark awards have been won by 90 of these stations. NCP is introducing new technology, e.g. automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) and mobile phone payment systems. The train operator Southern has achieved Park Mark status for 12 of its station car parks. These are managed by Meteor. Vinci Park's contract with Chiltern Railways has been extended until 2009 for the management of 17 railway station car parks. Vinci Park also manages 14 Silverlink stations between London and Birmingham. Parkeon Varioflex equipment has been installed at the new Frenchgate station in Doncaster. Telephone payment technology has been introduced by First Great Western and its parking enforcement contractor APCOA. CP Plus was awarded the contract to manage 93 station car packs for South West Trains with a new approach to enforcement called STEP (Staged Enforcement Policy).
