High speed rail - into the future
An edited extract from the Sir Robert Reid Lecture given by Guillaume Pepy, Chief Executive Officer of SNCF and Chairman of Eurostar, to the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport in February 2007 in London, UK is presented. The opportunities available to the rail industry are discussed with reference to the opening of new high speed lines and new investment in trains and high-speed lines. Pepy discusses the following six questions: (1) what do customers want from the rail industry? (2) how should the TGV high speed business model develop? (3) what regulation should govern the 'open access' market? (4) can high speed rail truly be an alternative to air travel? (5) how will our world partners in the train construction industry move forward? and (6) how fast is fast enough?
