The current situation in Chad

The poor state of the road network in Chad poses an obstacle to further growth in the agricultural sector and to rural development. In 2003, Chad adopted a National Poverty Reduction Strategy. Priority measures in the strategy included promoting the private sector, building basic infrastructure including transportation services, and to increase rural output. The National Transportation Strategy included the following objectives: promoting exchanges with neighbouring countries, reducing transportation costs, preserving a minimal level of accessibility, increasing the length of navigable roads, and modernising the transport sector and its administration. Action plans were developed for planning and evaluating transportation policies, upgrading the physical state of the road network (asphalting), management and maintenance of the national network, improving rural transportation, managing transport corridors to connect land-locked populations, improving road safety, and human resource management.
