The current situation in Burkina Faso: special program aimed at the transportation and tourism sectors
The road network of Burkina Faso consists of 15,272 km of roads and is managed by central government. In 1991, the government's General Policy Statement included a special programme aimed at the transportation and tourism sectors (PASEC-T). The top priority was the maintenance and rehabilitation of existing infrastructure. The second priority was to extend and enhance transport links with neighbouring countries. The actions taken to upgrade and develop infrastructures will be limited to those able to demonstrate an economic return. The framework programme included the requirement for state agencies to increase their level of efficiency, particularly in relation to how public-sector contracts are awarded and settled. The plan emphasised the need for modernising the Land and Maritime Transport Directorate, with the creation of a sector-specific database.
