Major environmental mitigation concerns in road projects

Environmental mitigation measures that were considered in a hill road construction project in India are described. These related to the following areas: preservation of property/amenities; quarries; borrow pits; spoil and construction waste disposal; work camp location and operation; labour camp location and management; earthworks and slope stabilisation; use of bitumen; stockpiling of materials; explosive, combustible and toxic materials handling; stone crushing plants and hot mix plants; water management; and air and noise pollution. The implementation of the environmental protection measures is discussed in relation to project design, contract language, bill of quantities, training and supervision, monitoring, public participation and coordination with other institutions, and cultural heritage or religious sites.
