Improving routes and times

The Haut Bugey line project is one of several Franco-Suisse projects to improve train links between France and Switzerland. Although located entirely in France, modernisation of the existing line linking Bourg-en-Bresse and Bellegarde-sur-Valserine will cut journey times between Paris and Geneva. The Swiss government will provide almost a third of the financing for the project due to the perceived benefits for the Swiss. The 65km railway runs through the mountainous region of the Haut Bugey. The modernisation project is discussed with reference to environmental protection measures, the protection of water resources, noise reduction, financing, civil works to improve bridges and tunnels, level crossings, the easing of curves, and electrification of the line.
