Avoiding a pain in the neck
Whiplash accounts for a quarter of a million reported injuries in the UK every year. Research has shown that 46% of all injury-causing accidents are rear-end collisions. The 2007 whiplash table compiled by Thatcham (the Motor Insurance Repair Research Centre) is presented. The performance of major models is rated as good, acceptable, marginal or poor. Car makers have become more aware of the need to design front seats to reduce whiplash injuries. Saab and Volvo lead the way with, respectively, the Saab Active Head Restraint and the WHIPS Whiplash Protection System. In the Saab system, the force of the occupant's body pushing into the seat is used to force the headrest forward. In the Volvo system, the whole seat back moves with the passenger. In both systems, the head restraint sits very close to the passenger's head.
