Development of Hairsine method for design of L-shaped walls
Hairsine published a paper in 1972 in the Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers entitled ?A design chart for determining the optimum base proportions of free standing retaining walls?, which has been used ever since for designing L-shaped walls. For small surcharge pressures, the author provides only an approximate method. Hairsine suggests a complicated procedure when surcharge loading represents a large proportion of the wall loading: if this procedure is used, the method loses its effectiveness. This paper sets out to show how, by introducing simple equivalent coefficients, the Hairsine chart may be accurately employed when there is uniform surcharge. In addition, instead of interpolating Hairsine curves, a suggestion is made to draw the curves for the particular design parameters and obtain the envelope directly through the use of a spreadsheet.
