A SYSTEM FOR THE FULLY AUTOMATIC CONTROL OF AN ASPHALT MIXING PLANT

The report describes in detail a system of plant control designed at the laboratory with the aim of improving the uniformity and compliance with specification of bituminous road materials. The system is modular and could easily be extended or adapted to other similar applications. It has been commissioned on the laboratory's pilot-scale "continuous dryer" asphalt mixing plant using a Kent "K70" process-control unit based on a "PDP-8" mini-computer; these are described briefly. The flow charts of the system are reproduced in full. Limited trials of the system have shown it to be a useful and practical one; the weighing and temperature-control modules have been particularly successful. It is recommended that further comprehensive trials be carried out to prove the viability of the system and that the system should then be installed on a commercial plant for evaluation under industrial conditions.(a) /TRRL/
