A first review of research upon car seat belts published between 1960 and 1977 was organised under five broad headings comprising: the extent of seat belt use; attitudes to seat belts; methods of influencing seat belt use; the effectiveness of seat belts; the effectiveness of legislation compelling seat belt use. Approximately two hundred and forty references were cited. The review was updated in April 1978 using approximately five hundred abstracts, including many published during 1977, to provide a second review. Additional abstracts were included in the original text under the five broad headings above. Two appendices were provided to include other abstracts felt to be germane to the topic of car seat belt research, but not appropriate for inclusion under the five broad headings above. /Author/TRRL/
