The influence of road construction, maintenance and traffic on the vegetation along roads has been studied. The investigation was carried out at 23 study sites, representing various vegetation types as well as different geological, hydrological and climatic conditions. Effects of a reduced water supply were demonstrated in some areas where the moisture-dependent species have decreased. The vegetation along roads on alpine heaths proved to be very sensitive to mechanical damage. Influence of roads on the hydrogeological conditions have been studied at five study sites. Four sites were located in road construction areas, while one site was located on a road where widespread damage to the trees along the road proved to be caused by high salt concentrations in the groundwater. At the study sites the groundwater level and the salt concentration in the groundwater were measured. The experience from the study sites and from the literature shows that it is mainly road construction and maintenance that influence the hydrogeological conditions. Lowering of the groundwater level is caused directly by excavations below the groundwater level as well as by reduced infiltration and by drainage of the road and its vicinity. Road embankments can cause damming to occur, especially on peaty ground. Under certain conditions the spreading of de-icing salt may pollute the groundwater close to roads. On the other hand, the general continuous pollution from traffic has not yet been proved to pollute the groundwater. /TRRL/
