This paper considers the engineering possibilities of a system for automatically controlling vehicles at over saturated road junctions, to increase the throughput of vehicles without the expense of major civil engineering works. Only junctions with traffic signals have been considered, and the layout is a 3-lane dual carriageway. A brief study is made of the possibilities and problems, and two items for trial, involving little work, are suggested. A description is given of the functioning of the proposed system and of possible driver behaviour during vehicle automatic control. A section of the report considers the ten main problem areas, and the remaining sections cover in more detail both the roadside and vehicle equipment, the implementation and potential costs and benefits of the system. /TRRL/
