WATER RETENTION, POROSITY AND DENSITY OF FIELD SOILS

This report records the physical properties of soil samples taken from 261 fully documented soil profiles throughout England. It describes sampling techniques and arrangements for sample storage, with procedures, apparatus and calculations for moisture release measurements. Laboratory methods for the measurement of soil parameters are discussed. An analysis of test results shows the relation between clay content and water retention, and the effect of various soil properties on the variations in available water and air capacity. An analysis by particle-size classification is included, and the use of diagrammatic presentation of soil profiles for soil classification is discussed. Finally, consideration is given to the effect of land use on soil properties and the use of profile available water together with climatic data to assess drought risk for grassland and arable crops. /TRRL/
