SINGLE ACCIDENT ANALYSIS - EXAMPLE AND RESULTS OF LONG-TERM RESEARCH

EINZELUNFALLANALYSE - BEISPIEL UND ERGEBNISSE EINER LANGEITUNTERSUCHUNG

Within the framework of a long term study medico-technical analyses have been carried out since 1968 on traffic accidents which led to the death or severe injury of the vehicle occupants. The Safety Division of Adam Opel AG, Ruesselheim, the Centre for Forensic Medicine of the University of Frankfurt/Main, the technical supervisory office in Darmstadt and the traffic police in Hesse participated in the research. The investigations, which have their origin in contacts and discussions during the World Congress for Traffic Medicine in Vienna on the 7th to the 13/5/1967, have till now thrown up some interesting results in the field of the biomechanics of traffic accidents and among other things led to design changes in motor vehicles for improving the safety of the occupants. The results are discussed in detail on the basis of the evaluated data. In several cases, where the accident was reconstructed in the crash test, the course of the accident, the vehicle damage and typical injury patterns are presented in a clear manner. /TRRL/
