States Take a Smoother Route
Free software from the Federal Highway Administration has been updated to include new features making it easier to adapt to different agencies' needs and capabilities. The software, called ProVAL (Profile Viewing and Analysis), processes pavement profile data, allowing users to analyze information collected by inertial pavement profile measuring equipment. It uses lasers and other devices to measure pavement smoothness with indexes, including the International Roughness Index (IRI). ProVAL is unique in its ability to synthesize data from different profilers and standardize it using a common format. Its data format was recently adopted as an ASTM International standard, "E 2560-67: Standard Specification for Data Format for Pavement Profile." The software can be downloaded at the FHWA Web site created for it http://www.roadprofile.com (accessed September 2007).
