CANopen Offers Lower-Cost Networks

A Controller Area Network (CAN) internationally standardized in ISO 11898-1 and ISO 11898-2 forms the basis of many rail vehicle application sub-networks. Developed for automotive applications in the 1980s, CAN is a very robust and flexible network. CAN in Automation (CiA) is improving the technology in order to expand, to rail manufacturers, possible benefits. The author examines CANopen, a higher layer protocol that enables system designers to integrate, into one network, devices from different manufacturers, giving the option of device functionality and cost choice and comparison.
