Madrid Shifts Emphasis from Metro to Light Rail

The author discusses implementation of light rail in Madrid, Spain. Unlike more provincial cities like Valencia, Bilbao, Barcelona, and Alicante, Madrid is only now making use of this technology, building its first three light rail lines in suburbs to the city center's west and north. The author examines reasons for the delay, such as that ensuring subway access to the city's densely-populated areas was Madrid's main priority in the past, and that on the periphery, there are new low-density developments underway. Madrid Transport Infrastructure (Mintra) is overseeing light rail network implementation on the city council's behalf. Details of each of the network lines, as well as LRV design, are given.
