Nothing But Blue Skies for 787
Boeing premiered its first new commercial jetliner, the Dreamliner, on July 8, 2007 in Seattle. This article describes what is new and different about the 787. The new aircraft is 30 percent smaller, has an ultra-long range, a 10 percent lower seat-mile cost, and higher fuel efficiency. In addition, the 787 will get better over time as it finds ways to save weight. Boeing is expected to deliver 43 787s to its first customers in May 2008. The author describes in detail the aircraft’s engines, the Trent 1000 by Rolls Royce, and GEnx by General Electric.
