Japan Rolls Out New Generation Shinkansen
The newest generation of Japan's high-speed Shinkansen trains should begin service in mid-2007. Highly innovative, the new Shinkansen are more efficient, more comfortable, quieter, and faster than their predecessors. JR West is scheduled to receive 12 16-car trains, and JR Central 42 16-car trains. The author discusses design and system components, including new interior design features. Designated smoking rooms, passenger information systems, seat design and composition, and possible wireless access on the Tokaido line (Tokyo to Shin-Osaka) are all examined in the article.
